Review
AltDesk is a desktop managing software application which allows you to create several virtual desktops where you can place different open windows and/or applications, and to clear your taskbar and main desktop area. It proves to be very useful when you need to keep many windows open and work with all of them at the same time.
The program installs a very light Desktop Manager where you can easily switch among the different desktops you are working with just by clicking on any of them. That is the main program's interface, and consists of a series of cells arranged horizontally and vertically as a grid. Every cell represents a desktop with all the little icons representing the active applications on it. You can even mouseover any of those icons to see a miniature of that window's contents, on any of the virtual desktops. You can also maximize or minimize any of those windows directly from here, which will cause a change of desktop whenever necessary. You can also use the "drag-and-drop" technique to move a specific application from one desktop to another.
You can access a configuration panel to set all the parameters and settings of the general program. Here you can adjust the number of rows and columns of the desktops grid, decide whether the program must automatically run at Windows startup or not, the interface language, the position of the buttons, or change the current skin (the program comes with four skins, but more can be downloaded). Besides, you can set names and establish hotkeys and even individual wallpapers for each virtual desktop, and many, many more options.
The program also installs an icon on the system tray area from where you can access the menu and maximize or minimize the main window. On that menu you can see the "Task List", a list with all the applications active in any of the desktops, for you to access any of them even quicker. There you can also tell the program if its main window should stay always on top, to bring all the open applications on all desktops to the current one, and to access the configuration panel mentioned above. In case you close AltDesk while all your windows are open in the different desktops, you will never lose your work, as all windows will merely change their appearance and will open up as individual windows, one of top of the other.
In my opinion, AltDesk is a very powerful and helpful application that provides a very important functionality - the chance to work on a clear and tidy environment, even when you need to have numerous windows and applications opened simultaneously. |
